These eyes are Rajah's, the Bengal Tiger. At this time he was living in the Triangle area, in Wake Forest, North Carolina.  He is fierce looking here, and is definitely a huge being, now weighing over 400 lbs. Rajah is never afraid to look right into you. Though horribly abused when he first arrived at the zoo, he is now confident, elegant and frisky.  For those of you that have never been this close to a tiger, I can only suggest that their presence is unforgettably intense. Your body reacts on its own...arm hairs up at attention! It's exhilarating. Though I have seen him purr, referred to as chuffling, and rub his head against my hands for a scratch, there is no question that this is one of the most formidable creatures on the earth...and probably the most beautiful. There are many ways to preserve them, and painting them is just one. We do so need to protect them.
